The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 27 - 30, 1970 Songo River Queen

Thursday, August 27, 1970

Betty up early and to Portland with Walt to see Kim and to bring her home. I took care of Carmen and Zak. Betty and Kim came at about 1 o’clock. She was on the weak side and timid but soon got to going.



Friday, August 28, 1970

A nice day. I did regular work, worked at desk etc. Betty to town, I stayed with the kids. She took Susan with her. She did her shopping. Betty bought me some things. She is very thoughtful. Showers at night, we didn’t go to town. Got card from Thomases. They are having a good time on vacation, New Hampshire and Vermont.



Saturday, August 29, 1970

A beautiful day. I got up about eight, done up the work after breakfast. Bill and I called at Jean’s and Gordon’s, done grocery shopping. Billie picked vegetables, down to Lawrence’s, up to Lil’s. Had Fern up for supper. Lloyd home early. Cliff’s last day of work in OHIO.




Sunday, August 30, 1970 Es, Cliff and Billie leave for Maine today for good bag and baggage

A nice day. Got up about 7:30, took my bath. Got breakfast, done regular work. Betty and Walt invited me to take a trip down to the boat, the Songo Queen in Naples. Very nice ride etc. Good time. Zak awful tired. Susan, Billie down after butter. Bill watched game on TV. Betty and I called at Aunt Ava’s in evening.
