The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 18 - 21, 1970


Thursday, June 18, 1970 cloudy, rain

Cloudy. Got showers today, some rain here. Tonight we had more showers and about two hours of a good rain. Hope the drought has broken. Betty, Billie, Carmen, Kim, Zak and I went to Fryeburg then to Portland by way of 113. Had a picnic lunch at Hiram Falls. Betty get some gifts for Walt’s Father’s Day. Es and Fern called at Aunt Ava’s tonight.



Friday, June 19, 1970

Nice and sunny this morning. I done up my work. Es came up this morning to spend the day. After supper Bill took me to town to shop.



Saturday, June 20, 1970

A beautiful day. Bill and Billie worked outside. Kids up a few times during the day. Bill harrowed the garden. Billie worked on the stonewall and painted fence and grain barrel. Mowed lawns etc. All down to Betty and Walt’s for supper. Had a nice feed, very good. Fern, Es, Bill, Billie, Billie and me.



Sunday, June 21, 1970

A nice day. We worked outside in the yard etc. It looks so nice outside. Fern, Lloyd called and Dorothea, Dave and Jeff. Vicky called a minute in eve to ask us to go to the 25th wedding anniversary for Gordon and Sal. Es and Dorothea called at Betty and Walt.
Putting together a new grill on Father's Day. Billie D helping Daddy while Carm and I supervise.
