The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 11 - 14, 1970


Saturday, July 11, 1970

A nice hot day, we had showers late at night. Bill’s arm is quite lame. Kids here today, I did regular work and baked beans and made a cake. Billie down country would Lawrence looking for cattle. Betty and Walt got home at about 10 PM. Got a lot of nice things. Bill, girls and I to town.



Sunday, July 12, 1970

A nice day except in p.m. we had some bad thundershowers and heavy rains. Bill to the hospital to take x-rays of his arm. No broken bones but it is swollen awful bad. Bill and Billie did the lawns. Thomas family called and the Horton’s also. Lawrence Boynton and Fern and Lloyd. I went over to Aunt Ava’s in eve.



Monday, July 13, 1970

Nice, clear and sunny after all the rain and showers of the past afternoon and evening. Bill didn’t work, he has a very badly swollen arm and hand. I washed, clothes dried good. Billie to town to see about his car. He decided to take it to Rudy’s. I went to town with Betty.



Tuesday, July 14, 1970

A nice day. Billie mowed hay and Walt’s. Bill worked on his car. I did regular work and ironed. Down to Betty’s. It looks good to see the hay mowed. I called on Ken and Delores’s in evening. Aunt Ava is getting depressed and down again. Jim Graffam called. Betty, kids and I called at Holly’s new home.
