The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Partly cloudy, on the cool windy side. Rained last night. I figured at desk, done regular work. Called at Betty’s. Kim came up here for supper. Did some washing. I got a birthday card and five dollars from Milan and Betty. Es came at 6 o’clock. Cliff and Billie didn’t come until about 9 PM with truck.

Tuesday, September 1, 1970 Windy

A very windy day but sunny. We went and looked at trailers at Norway today. Had a good time. They are all very pretty. Es, Cliff and family, Betty, kids and me. Came home, got supper. Bill over to Aunt Ava’s with Cliff to look at land. Also Walt and kids went and Kennard. I called at Betty’s in evening.

Wednesday, September 2, 1970 Clear but windy

I done up my work, down to Betty’s to babysit while Es, Cliff, Susan, Billie, Vince, Betty and Carmen went looking at trailers at South Portland and Lewiston. They didn’t get home until very late. I washed while I was at Betty’s. Es and Cliff here for supper. After supper Bill, Billie, Kennard and Cliff went and looked over the land they are buying of Ava’s. Es, Fern, Betty and I called at Susan’s. Very windy. Took the truck back today.

Thursday, September 3, 1970

A pretty good day, no wind, but on the cool side. I washed at Betty’s. Es, Cliff, Betty and Billie D went to Windham to see a house idea. Came home and in p.m. went to Norway. Came down to two trailers to choose from. Also called at Ava’s and got land in their possession. Betty and I called there also, what a grouch she was today. Betty has had it with her. She has been awful to everyone lately. Carmen up here to stay all night. Es and Cliff had supper at Ferns. She was sick and upset-Aunt Ava.
