The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 29 - July 2, 1970

Monday, June 29, 1970 Gilley died early today, heart attack

A very nice day, warmer than yesterday. I washed, did my work. Betty and kids did the weeding in the garden. Did a very good job. I went over to Aunt Ava’s in p.m. Fern, Es called on her in evening. Billie D drove Betty’s car today. Alton Giles died early this morning. Shock to his working mates.

Tuesday, June 30, 1970 Susan called

Had rain showers last night, some thunder and lightning and good rains all day. I went for a ride down to Songo Lock with Lloyd, Fern and Es. Betty and children called, also Ken and Delores, Billie D and Es and Fern.

Wednesday, July 1, 1970

Dorothy Prescott is in hospital. Had a tumor operation. Esther came up today. Fern came later for supper. A nice day.

Thursday, July 2, 1970

Esther came up today. We talked about Susan’s troubles. Had a steak supper. Fern stayed home and caught up on some of the things she has been putting off. Jeff Smith and Nola came. Es, Betty, kids and I went to town. Billie started his vacation tonight.
