The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, July 15, 1970 Mama’s Birthday

Cloudy. I did regular work. Down to Betty’s while she did her lawns. Bill worked on his car. Billie took his car to garage for motor job. Billie worked on the stonewall and it looks very good. Vince raked and baled some of the hay at Walt’s. Fern and Lloyd called at Betty’s and here in p.m. Betty and I over to Aunt Ava’s in eve. Also called at Ferns. Randy called with his new bike he got yesterday.



Thursday, July 16, 1970

I done regular work. Kind of cloudy and rain at times. I did some ironing. Bill worked on his car. Billie took his to the garage. Bill used Betty’s car today.



Friday, July 17, 1970

A very nice day. Billie, Fern, Lloyd and I went up to Joy and Buddy’s. Had a nice visit. Came home. Fern, Lloyd here for supper. Got letter from Esther. They may all come to Maine to live.



Saturday, July 18, 1970 Showers in p.m.

I done regular work. Down town, got Bill new shoes. I got some things at Niemi’s. Billie got his car back. Bill and I called at Betty’s. A nice mild day. Lawrence’s crew hauled hay. Walt worked. Showers. Phone call from Susan. They are all coming to Maine to live.
