The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 8 - 11, 1970 School Begins




Tuesday, September 8, 1970 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Carmen began school today, second grade. She looks so nice all dressed up. I done regular work, down to Betty’s to babysit. Es and Betty over to Lucks to look at a trailer. In evening we all went over and picked out a very pretty trailer. They all liked it very much. Es and Cliff here for supper.





Wednesday, September 9, 1970 Kim began Humpty Dumpty School

Another cloudy miserable day. Betty took Kim to her Humpty Dumpty School for first time. She liked it quite while. I washed at the laundry today. Cliff called. Billie D called also Gordon here to see Cliff. Betty and Walt’s company left today for their home in Pennsylvania.

Thursday, September 10, 1970 Rain

Today Cliff is home. Earl Hotchkiss is surveying his land. This has been a miserable week, cloudy and today it is rainy. Betty, Kim, Zak and I to Norway to shop for Zak’s birthday. Zak doesn’t feel good, has a cold.



Friday, September 11, 1970

A beautiful day. I done up regular work. Went to town shopping with Betty. Es and Susan went. The Deming’s here for supper. They are busy with all their house business etc.
