The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 8 - 11, 1970 Nanny Turns 60!!!


Saturday, August 8, 1970 60 years today

A nice hot day. Walt worked. Billie away with Lawrence. I did regular work, made rolls. Down to Betty’s for supper. They had a cake. I had a lot of nice gifts. $30 in money. All very nice. Fern, Lloyd, Thomas family, Susan, Vince and us. A beautiful cake, but I told them not to do a thing.



Sunday, August 9, 1970

A quite hot day. Done up regular work. Down town. Came home, got ready for a cookout at Horton’s and Aunt Ava here. Fern, Lloyd called. Es called by phone. They are selling their place and will come to Maine to live. Betty and I down to tell Susan.



Monday, August 10, 1970

A nice day, on the awful hot side. Up early, got work done. Betty, kids and I to Portland and done the kids school shopping. Got a lot of nice pretty clothes. Called at Dorothea’s a minute. Also at Susan’s a minute.



Tuesday, August 11, 1970

A cloudy day, on the quite warm side. I done up my work early, waxed kitchen floor. Down to laundry with Fern and Lloyd. We did Aunt Ava’s washing. Susan and Vince came back with us to spend the day and for supper. I washed. We called at Betty’s.
