The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 16 - 19, 1970



Sunday, August 16, 1970 Hortons at Walt’s, Rager it Susan’s

This is the HOTTEST. 100° today, a dite of breeze. Called at Kennard’s and saw the house. Also left some vegetables at Aunt Ava’s. Didn’t do much today except sit around. Called at Betty’s in evening. Tom Rager and friend there. They left Susan about 12 midnight to go home.



Monday, August 17, 1970

HOT. I did a dite of washing. We called it Susan’s. I went down to Betty’s, she helped Susan and p.m. to get settled. The things Tom brought yesterday and Saturday. I made a pie today.



Tuesday, August 18, 1970 Windy today, on the cool clear side

It was cooler today and windy. Betty, Susan and I went to Norway. Zak and Vince went. Carmen and Kim up to Delores’s to play with Kathy. A very nice day. Did regular work.



Wednesday, August 19, 1970

A very nice day. Clear and cool. Went down to Betty’s. We made root beer. Betty and I took a short walk down in 9 acre field and into edge of woods. Fern, Lloyd called at Betty’s. They had Susan and Vince up for the day. Bill and I down to Jean and Stan’s in evening. Also called at Aunt Ava’s. Dorothea called on the phone. Betty did some washing for me.
