The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 23 - 26, 1961






Saturday, September 23, 1961

HOT HOT. Betty worked for Blanche. I cooked, washed, cleaned up the house. Dolores here in a.m. In evening Blanche and I took Betty over to Auburn to see Mike’s mother. Betty was so much happier after she came home from there. She had heard his mother wasn’t going to let Mike marry. Billie busy all day.



Sunday, September 24, 1961

Hot. Finished cutting the beef up today. Mama went for a ride with Kennie, Dot and Dolores. In p.m. after a steak cookout dinner at Fern and Lloyd’s, Bill, Billie, Betty and I, we went for a ride up through Conway, Eaton and Freedom New Hampshire.



Monday, September 25, 1961

A mean cloudy rainy day. We need the rain very much. Glad we had it. I canned tomatoes. Betty ironed. Hot and muggy.



Tuesday, September 26, 1961

Cloudy with showers. I washed after it cleared off. Quite warm and muggy. Billie and I down to Jean’s in forenoon. Betty did most of my washing while I was gone.

September 19 - 22, 1961

A nice day, on the cool side. I ironed. Betty around home most all day. Went for a ride in late p.m. Rowena called in evening.



Wednesday, September 20, 1961 Warmer

Blanche took Betty and me to Portland. Also Dot went with us and took her TV into Sears. We had a nice trip. We are now going to make plans for her and Mike’s wedding. Hurricane Esther is coming toward the New England coast.



Thursday, September 21, 1961

Cloudy in a.m. with wind and rain beginning. Hurricane Esther is expected today. Billie and Lloyd cut up a quarter of the beef today.



Friday, September 22, 1961

Cleared off nice today. Billie, Lloyd cut more beef. I was busy all day. In evening Bill and I to town. Called at Blanche’s. Bill got his hair cut. Betty downtown tonight. The veterinarian came to see Phantom tonight. She has hives.

Friday, September 15, 1961

Cloudy. We got some rain early this morning. We sure need it up. I ironed. Fern and Lloyd here in p.m. Mama had a little bad spell this morning. Betty gone down to Dawn’s this p.m. to spend the night. We saved the cows milk today.



Saturday, September 16, 1961

Very nice day. I done a little cooking. Betty came home from Dawn’s. Dawn stayed for supper. Bill, Betty, Dawn and I to the movies in evening. We enjoyed it very much. Betty seemed to be glad we went.



Sunday, September 17, 1961

A beautiful day. Had our first frost last night. I called at Aunt Ava’s in a.m. Bill, Billie and Betty picked the veggies over in garden. Betty went for a ride on horse. Mama went for a ride with Bob and Blanche. Bill, Betty over to South Harrison. George and Thena called. Art Ward, Kennie and Dot. Fern and Lloyd. I went up to Arthur Sanborn’s to see the new barn. Called at Herbert and Esther Allen’s.



Monday, September 18, 1961 LETTER FROM MIKE AND DOROTHEA

Nice cool day. A very nice day. I washed. Billie hauled corn fodder. Betty up late, helped Billie some. When riding on the horse. Betty got a nice letter from Mike. Very understanding. We got one from Dorothea and family too. Was so glad to hear from her. On the cool side here today and tonight. Betty downtown.

September 10 - 14, 1961



Sunday, September 10, 1961

HOT HOT. Bill and Billie finished Phantom’s stall down to the barn. Blanche and Dolores called. Blanche here for dinner. Bill, Betty and I with Blanche and Lassie up to the blacksmith at Waterford. Lloyd and Fern called. Betty to Norway with Helen and Kay. Joy and family got home about 5 PM. Began hauling our drinking water.



Monday, September 11, 1961 Calf BORN

HOT HOT HOT I washed. Today Milky Way had a heifer calf. Betty got a nice picture of a very nice guy, MIKE. He is so nice looking. Delores called. Betty gone all p.m. and evening. I wish she would stay at home. Bad hurricane in Texas.



Tuesday, September 12, 1961 Hot, Hurricane Carla

Another very hot day. I went up to Dolore’s. Blanche called. Today Betty and Mike’s engagement came out in the paper. I am glad they are going to marry. I hope she will be happy.


Wednesday, September 13, 1961 hurricane Carla

A cloudy day, just a little rain. Betty home all day and evening. Seemed rested and relaxed. Delores called. I called at Ferns. Phantom was showed tonight.



Thursday, September 14, 1961

Hot again today. I washed. Betty rode Phantom up to Irene’s in evening and over to Harrison with Randy Harmon. Aunt Ava called, also Dolores. I cleaned up the house. Blanche got a call from Joy. She is okay, they didn’t get hit by hurricane Carla. Hurricane Esther is on the way to mainland of United States.

Hot, not so hot as yesterday, yet very hot.  Betty down to Dawn’s for a while. Fern called here, also Delores was up. Joy and family left early this morning. Billie didn’t work. Beef heifer went tonight.

Been quite busy today. I ironed.



Thursday, September 7, 1961 Hurricane Carla

Clouded up during day. Partly cloudy in a.m. Got a call from Betty, she had a letter from Mike. She read to me, she seemed happy about that. Carla hit in around Gulf of Mexico and the towns in Texas of that region. Joy wasn’t hit in Beaumont.



Friday, September 8, 1961

A nice day. I washed, cleaned up the house, canned a few tomatoes. Went to town after supper. Didn’t buy much. Kennard and Dolores called in evening. Billie and I called at Ferns. Aunt Ava to hospital. She came home with good reports. She is okay.



Saturday, September 9, 1961

Nice day, very HOT. Betty came home from Dawn’s, she seemed rested.  Bill, Billie and Betty finished the hen house, started on the stall for Phantom. Dawn and her father called. Bessie called. Art Ward called. I cooked.
