The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 19 - 22, 1961



Monday, June 19, 1961 Hot Hot

It has been a very nice day. I washed, clothes dried good. Got them in and after supper I ironed. Betty and Mike with Irene and (?) Lenny, Dave and Linda down to Dawn’s for spaghetti supper. I took care of (?) Lennie and Jimmy Carsley. Billie feels much relieved knowing his haying is all done.



Tuesday, June 20, 1961

A nice day, hot. I cooked some. Mike went home this morning, coming back tonight. Kids down town in late p.m. to movies. Home very late. Horse busted timbers in barn where she stands, had to put her in pasture. Bill and I tried to fix it after supper.



Wednesday, June 21, 1961

Cloudy, showers beginning about suppertime. Didn’t do much today. Made pie. Betty made (?) mace cookies. Dolores called. Mike and Dave up very early, went fishing. Didn’t get many. Betty, Mike to movies. Billie up late, didn’t do much today.



Thursday, June 22, 1961 Rain Rain Rain

I didn’t do much. Cleaned up the chambers. Mike out looking for work. Betty up to Irene’s to babysit.
