The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 5 - 8, 1961 Susan Arrives For The Summer

Cold and windy. This morning Mike left us bag and baggage.  He is going home to Auburn. Will work there.



Thursday, July 6, 1961 Jeff 3 years, Susan leaves tonight for Maine

Nice day, clothes dried good. Miss Mike so much.  I washed, cleaned up the whole house, washed the bedroom floors. Getting ready for Susan. Blanche and Joy and little girls here in p.m. Betty worked up to Irene’s. Rowena down home. Her folks came home today. I ironed after supper. Betty to movies in evening.






Friday, July 7, 1961

Nice all forenoon. Cooler in p.m. I done up the work, churned, made pie, picked peas. Betty home from Irene’s in early p.m. Rowena and mother came up this a.m. They brought me a very pretty dress for me for having Rowena up here this past week.


Saturday, July 8, 1961 Debbie Wolff 2, Susan came

A cloudy, showery, dreary day. Awful weather. Susan got here about 1 PM. Glad to see her, she has grown both ways. Verna and Nola brought her down. Bill and I to town and called at Harry Cross’s. Betty worked till late p.m. To movies in evening. Blanche and Joy here and two girls. Debbie very cute. Fern and Lloyd came up to see Susan. Mr. Smith here to see Phantom. Billie didn’t have to work tonight. Mama got new mattress for birthday.
