The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 19 - 22, 1961



Saturday, August 19, 1961

I did a little cooking. Baked some beans which were very good tonight. Billie up to Skowhegan Fair with Lawrence and Alice Boynton. I took Irene’s kids for tonight. Mama got a letter from Dorothea. They are planning to go up to Scotland this coming Tuesday.



Sunday, August 20, 1961

Not much doing today except I had Irene’s three kids part of the day. I cleaned Bill’s car. Kennie and Dot called. Dolores here in p.m. The small Guernsey cow and calf went today.



Monday, August 21, 1961

Cloudy, not much rain. Uncle Lewis and Thena and myself down to MMC to see Aunt Ava. She is very good. Didn’t get home till late. I sent Esther a letter. Billie quite tired, had to go to dentist again. I babysat at Blanche’s tonight.



Tuesday, August 22, 1961

A nice day. I washed a big wash. Also washed things for Uncle Lewis. I got my snaps back today. Betty home in p.m. Billie slept late this day. I got a letter from Dr. Nash.
