The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 10 - 14, 1961



Sunday, September 10, 1961

HOT HOT. Bill and Billie finished Phantom’s stall down to the barn. Blanche and Dolores called. Blanche here for dinner. Bill, Betty and I with Blanche and Lassie up to the blacksmith at Waterford. Lloyd and Fern called. Betty to Norway with Helen and Kay. Joy and family got home about 5 PM. Began hauling our drinking water.



Monday, September 11, 1961 Calf BORN

HOT HOT HOT I washed. Today Milky Way had a heifer calf. Betty got a nice picture of a very nice guy, MIKE. He is so nice looking. Delores called. Betty gone all p.m. and evening. I wish she would stay at home. Bad hurricane in Texas.



Tuesday, September 12, 1961 Hot, Hurricane Carla

Another very hot day. I went up to Dolore’s. Blanche called. Today Betty and Mike’s engagement came out in the paper. I am glad they are going to marry. I hope she will be happy.


Wednesday, September 13, 1961 hurricane Carla

A cloudy day, just a little rain. Betty home all day and evening. Seemed rested and relaxed. Delores called. I called at Ferns. Phantom was showed tonight.



Thursday, September 14, 1961

Hot again today. I washed. Betty rode Phantom up to Irene’s in evening and over to Harrison with Randy Harmon. Aunt Ava called, also Dolores. I cleaned up the house. Blanche got a call from Joy. She is okay, they didn’t get hit by hurricane Carla. Hurricane Esther is on the way to mainland of United States.
