The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 31 - August 3, 1961



Monday, July 31, 1961 Letter from MIKE

Partly cloudy. I washed, at 10 o’clock down to the dentist, had two teeth out. Today Betty got a letter from Mike. First one since he got into the service. She will send hers to him now that she has his address. The Lamb went today. How we blatted after he was put onto the truck.



Tuesday, August 1, 1961

A nice day. I cooked, ironed, helped Billie picked peas and beans. Bred the little Guernsey cow tonight.


Wednesday, August 2, 1961 LETTER FROM ADAIR’S

A nice letter from Dorothea and family. A nice sunny morning. Mama on a picnic with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. I fixed peas for freezer and froze string beans. Picked peas. Susan down to Ferns today and stayed all night. Bill and I called at Ferns in evening. Betty here for supper.



Thursday, August 3, 1961 Cooler

Not a very good day. Cloudy day, cool. I washed. The clothes dried good. Billie up early, he and I to town. Betty home early and made cookies to send Mike. I made him some donuts. Susan home from Ferns this afternoon. Billie to work at noon today. I cleaned up the whole house.
