The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, July 13, 1961

A nice day. Had a bad shower after supper. I washed, clothes dried good. After supper Ruth and Joe Hatch came up here. We had a bad thunder shower. Mike called to get his fishing rod. His mother brought him. He looked good.



Friday, July 14, 1961 Ronald Faucher’s birthday

A cloudy rainy day. I ironed. Done up the work. In p.m. Rowena came up with Betty. Susan rode Phantom. In evening Bill, all the kids and I to town. Betty stayed at Rowena’s all night.



Saturday, July 15, 1961 Allie M. Smith’s birthday

Today has been cloudy and rain showers. Mama over to Aunt Ava’s for the day, had a good time. In evening Bob’s folks here, had birthday cake and ice cream. Bill, Susan and I at Jean’s and to town. Mike called and talked today a long long time. She may see him tonight. I hope. Mike up to see Betty. Hope he comes again. Billie got pigs today.




Sunday, July 16, 1961

Rain rain, all day hard. A dreary long day. Didn’t get up till 10 AM. Didn’t do much. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie and Dot here. Today Mike came here with Betty. She went away with him. Billie bought butter. Carlton and family came.
