The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 8, 1964



Saturday, September 5, 1964

A very nice day, on the cool side. Betty and I over to June Stackhouse’s, downtown. Came home, made biscuits. Fern up for supper. Norma called today. She and her friend Rick took Carmen and Betty for a ride.



Sunday, September 6, 1964

A beautiful day. I done up my regular work. Betty gone all day and all night. Aunt Ava here in p.m. Kennie, Dot, Fern and Lloyd. Billie got the cows up into the field today. He mowed Chet’s hay. Hauled the dump stuff off.



Monday, September 7, 1964 Labor Day

Did a real big wash. Bill and Billie didn’t have to work. A very nice sunny hot day. Fern, Lloyd called. Betty, Carmen and I out in p.m. Came home, had a steak cookout for supper. Billie haying up to Chet’s and for Lawrence. Bill and I called at Ferns.

Tuesday, September 8, 1964

A nice day. I wrote my letter’s, sent letters and payments etc. To town in p.m. Betty cleaned up her house. Didn’t feel very good.

Tuesday, September 1, 1964

A very nice day, done up regular work. Made a apple pie, cooked a chicken supper. Had Mike and Betty down. Betty, Carmen and I to town and called the Ferns. Carmen to the doctors, said she is all right. I don’t believe it. Called to see the trees gone at Ferns, looks odd. Bill and I down to Fern and Kennard’s in evening. Looks much lighter at Fern house with trees gone. Bill and Betty took the 1958 Chevy over to Harrison to be sold. Bet and Mike not out tonight.



Wednesday, September 2, 1964

A very nice day. I rushed around, done my housework. Picked peas etc. Had Jean up for supper. She enjoyed everything very much. Bill and I took her home. Betty and Mike out tonight. Mama been gone five months today. I still miss her all the time. It don’t seem she is gone.



Thursday, September 3, 1964

A beautiful day. I washed. A big one. Got my clothes iron. Betty and Mike off most all day. Came home and cleaned up the car.



Friday, September 4, 1964

A nice day, it rained. I cleaned up my house, done some figuring. To town after supper, Bill and I. Betty and Mike at home tonight. Betty and I called at Chet and Lil’s.

August 28 - 31,1964 Carmen Breaks Her Collarbone



Friday, August 28, 1964

A beautiful day, very pretty, on the warm side. Had all the windows open. I done up my work, picked peas, shelled them. Got pictures of Lloyd’s back. Betty, Carmen and I took a ride down to Ferns, up over the new road. Bill and I to town in evening.



Saturday, August 29, 1964 Carmen broke her Collar Bone

She fell out of her crib,  she hurt her terribly. They took her to the doctors, he strapped her up for four weeks. Chet Edson had a serious accident today on a tractor. Fern here for supper. Betty and Mike to the races tonight.





Sunday, August 30, 1964

A beautiful day, on the hot side. I can some shell beans. Busy all day. Carmen not too peppy today. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie, Dot and Aunt Ava called. Betty away all day. Billie back from the fair about 11:30.



Monday, August 31, 1964

Rain. Heavy rain showers. I washed, hung clothes on the porch. Carmen’s arm not so good. Betty took her to the doctors but didn’t see him. Hope something is done soon. Betty, Carmen and I to Norway in PM. Got some PJs for Carmen also she got her some shirts. Billie up to Chet’s in evening. Sally and Gordon’s called in evening.

August 24 - 27, 1964

A very nice hot sunny day. Cleared all off after two days of very good rain. I did my washing, got my clothes in, ironed after supper.



Tuesday, August 25, 1964

A beautiful day. I got my work done early. Went to Oxford with Fern and Lloyd, Carmen and I to see the new mobile home. Came home, Betty, Carmen and I to town, paid phone bill. Came home, prepared supper. Had Jean up, she enjoyed it very much.



Wednesday, August 26, 1964

I done up my work. Cloudy and rain showers. Picked some shell beans. Carmen got cold and wet today. I done some odds and end jobs after Carmen went to bed. We watched Democratic convention on TV tonight. Cleared off in early evening.



Thursday, August 27, 1964 Billie to Acton Fair

A nice day. Carmen and I here alone all day. Betty and Mike off with their close friends. Carmen is real cute. I did a big wash, picked shell beans. Fern, Lloyd called. Betty and Mike off tonight again with friends. Bill and I enjoyed the Democratic convention, the memorial tribute to JF Kennedy. Billie left tonight at about 7:30 to go to Acton fair. I’m glad for him.

Dennis Harvey Adair’s birthday. I washed, ironed, done regular work. Mike home all day for his day off. Carmen down here all day, what a rat. Billie got his beef heifer tonight. Man came to see Bill tonight (Mr. Rice) about gravel for Rt 117.



Friday, August 21, 1964

Fair but on the cool side. I done up work, done some writing, figuring etc. Fern and Lloyd called. Bill, Carmen and I to town tonight. A switch. Sent L. Film.



Saturday, August 22, 1964  

RAINED all day very hard. I made a pie, cake and cream puffs. Baked beans. Fern here for supper. Bill watched TV. Carmen down here most all day. Billie worked half a day. Got the cows in tonight.



Sunday, August 23, 1964

RAIN all day. I got up about 9 AM. Betty gone all day. Mike work. Fern, Lloyd called. Aunt Ava in p.m. Kennie and Dot called. I went to Denmark with Betty and Dawn. Billie down to Lawrence’s. Dorothea called today. I talked with she and Jeff. They have a colored TV.
