The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 28 - 31, 1964



Thursday, May 28, 1964

It was so cold all day and windy. I cleaned up the whole house. I churned today. Billie and Betty mowed lawns. Billie cleaned out some raspberries.



Friday, May 29, 1964 got strawberry plants

A nice day, on the cool cool cool side. Blanche, Carmen and I went to Gorham and got our strawberry plants. Betty and Billie here alone all day. Billie didn’t have to work. He fixed his fence and finished the raspberries. I got my plants for Cemetery. I got plants for my flower boxes. Betty gone to all night drive in. Ashley Dyer called to see Bill.



Saturday, May 30, 1964 DOROTHEA CALLED

A nice clear day, on the cool side. It was just fine talking to Dorothea, Dennis and Jeffie. I wish she was here. She is a good girl. I done up the work. Bill set out STRAWBERRY plants. Billie cleaned his car in p.m. Phil Hunt’s family called in p.m. We had supper at Fern and Lloyd’s.



Sunday, May 31, 1964

Cool. A partly cloudy day, not much doing. I set out rest of my dahlias. Betty and I to town. I wrote to Esther. Billie downtown. Betty reading. Carmen playing. Billie, Betty, Carmen and I all went over to Brownfield to see a Guernsey cow. Took a ride over through Fryeburg and Lovell to Sweden and home. Came home, had supper. Joe Hatch went up to the HOUSE. Betty and I up to see Mr. Vose. Fern, Lloyd, Kennie and Dot called.
