The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 16 -19, 1964



Sunday, August 16, 1964

Up about 8 AM, got breakfast. All gone, Bill, Carmen and I here alone most of the day. I cleaned the inside of the new car. Kennie, Dot called and Fern and Lloyd. Verna and children called. Brud and family left today to go home.



Monday, August 17, 1964 Got new cow or heifer

A fair day, warmer. I did my washing. Betty done hers last night. They began to work on the barn today. Betty to Portland again today. She bought her a Siamese cat. Billie got a new cow tonight. A very nice looking half Guernsey and half jersey cow and kitten.



Tuesday, August 18, 1964

Warmer. I made pie and donuts, wrote letters to Beat, Peg and George. Lloyd and Fern called in p.m. I picked a mess of green peas today. Betty and Mike out tonight all alone. Mr. Goodwin finished the barn today.



Wednesday, August 19, 1964

Cloudy day. I done up my work, got beans ready for supper. In p.m. Betty, Carmen and I over to Aunt Ava’s and Uncle Lewis’s and p.m. Betty and Mike out tonight. Man called to see Bill early this morning. Mike and his wife out again tonight.
