The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 19 - 22, 1964



Sunday, July 19, 1964

Very hot and humid after the early-morning thunder shower. Picked string beans, strawberries and raspberries. Done up regular work. Went over to North Bridgton beach with Es, Fern, Betty, Susan, Billie, Carmen. All went swimming. Carmen has such a good time. Came home, had a cookout. Kennie, Dot here. Called Dorothea.



Monday, July 20, 1964

A nice hot day, clothes dried good. We got our ironing done in p.m. Esther here and cooked a pot roast. Nancy Andrews and Susan took a walk to town in p.m. Betty waiting, waiting.



Tuesday, July 21, 1964


 Mike+ Betty+ Carmen No Mike today Mike is in the hospital in Oakland California. Gordon up tonight and got water hooked up upstairs for Betty and Mike. Very hot, very bad thunder showers in evening. Es, Fern and Bill up in evening.



Wednesday, July 22, 1964

No Mike today, no word. I done up regular work and some odds and end jobs. In p.m. we had very bad thundershowers. No Gordon tonight to finish the job. Billie Deming up in PM. Bill and I down to funeral parlor to see Howard Burnham.
