The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 8 - 11, 1964

Saturday, August 8, 1964 54 years

Cloudy and some showers. Es, Bill, Betty, Carmen and I went to Bristol New Hampshire. Bill bought a 1958 Chevy light blue hardtop convertible of Carl Hansen. Had a nice trip on my 54th birthday. Came home, had a nice birthday cake and a nice baked beans supper all ready. Fern and Es made the cake. I cooked chocolate pie, apple pie and rolls in early morning. Norma and Susan to town in evening. Bet and Mike picked them up.

Sunday, August 9, 1964

Partly cloudy. Got up about 830, got breakfast, done up work. Cleaned birds. Get ready to go to Ferns for cookout.

Monday, August 10, 1964

Well I did quite a wash getting the kids clothes all washed up for them. Es and Billie came up here for supper. Fern came up later. Es and kids downtown in p.m. Heifer’s went tonight.

Tuesday, August 11, 1964

Esther, Norma, Susan and Billie all left for their homes this morning. I hated to see them go as usual. We all enjoyed them all and had a lot of good times. I did a big ironing, done some housework. Fern, Lloyd called. It was a nice day for them. Betty took Norma to Portland in Billie’s car. Dawn here today. Our car in the garage.
