The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 12 - 15, 1964



Wednesday, August 12, 1964

A cloudy day and rained hard in p.m. I cleaned up all the house, got my things down from the shed chambers to pack for the trip. Esther called tonight, they got home at four this afternoon. Dave Thomas left early this morning for the Army.



Thursday, August 13, 1964

Nice day. A very nice clear day. I washed. Mike’s  day off. He and Betty with Christie took a walk through the woods down where they are working. Bill, Mike, Christie and I went down after supper. Lloyd called today. Ate outside tonight. I did some packing, made a apple pie. Our car still in the garage.



Friday, August 14, 1964

I done up my work, had ham for supper. Didn’t get to town tonight. Betty and Mike at home tonight, no car.



Saturday, August 15, 1964 Got 1958 Chevrolet

A nice day, on the cool side. I done up my work. Fern and Dawn here for supper. After supper they went to New Hampshire for the car. Billie’s 1958 Chevy. Dawn, Bill, Betty and Mike. Fern and I stayed here. Dawn stayed here all night.
