The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 29 - July 2, 1964 (And 30 Years Later)



Monday, June 29, 1964 Finished Haying

A hot day. Finished the haying, didn’t get it wet. Blanche and Carmen and I went to Portland in a.m. I washed in PM. Verna and children here today. Betty not away tonight.



Tuesday, June 30, 1964

I did some windows and curtains today. I picked 8 boxes of strawberries. A searching party went out for Roger Maynard tonight. Bill and rest of the town crew. Betty not away tonight.



Wednesday, July 1, 1964 Hot

Well this month Mike will come home. Well today we finished all the downstairs cleaning. Billie and the crew finished Stan Whitney’s hay and finished mowing up to Ray McDonald’s. Blanche, Bob here. We picked 8 quarts berries. Dave here in evening. MIKE COMES HOME THIS MONTH.



Thursday, July 2, 1964

Mama been gone three months today. I washed. Cleaned up my chambers. Today Betty decided to move upstairs instead of taking the Vose house. Nola and Kathy here. Still miss Mama. Think of her each day. I hope to meet her again.

(Exactly 30 years to the day they met again. Nanny died July 2, 1994)
