The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 27 - 30, 1964



Monday, July 27, 1964

Very hot. I washed. Es called. Lloyd called and got some greens and beans. I picked some berries and string beans. Called at Ferns in evening. Lloyd’s cat still at vets.



Tuesday, July 28, 1964 MIKE TO WORK

Mike began work at Rudy’s today. We cleaned up the whole house today. Pick strawberries. Es here in p.m. and for supper. Aunt Ava called. Betty is so pleased about Mike’s job.



Wednesday, July 29, 1964 Dorothea 27 years today

Billie began working at Raymond today. Mike back to work at Rudy’s for second day. I made Es a custard pie. Also I made an Apple pie. Es up here today.



Thursday, July 30, 1964

Much cooler. Fair and sunny. Down to Ferns all day. Es and Fern fixed my dresses and got them ready for the trip. I borrowed some of Ferns. Came home, got supper. Es and Fern up in evening. Es pressed dresses. Es and I took one down to Mrs. Hatch to be altered. Called at Kennard’s. Mike worked. He and Betty up to Lil and Chet’s to help hay after supper.
