The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 20 - 23, 1964



Thursday, August 20, 1964

Dennis Harvey Adair’s birthday. I washed, ironed, done regular work. Mike home all day for his day off. Carmen down here all day, what a rat. Billie got his beef heifer tonight. Man came to see Bill tonight (Mr. Rice) about gravel for Rt 117.



Friday, August 21, 1964

Fair but on the cool side. I done up work, done some writing, figuring etc. Fern and Lloyd called. Bill, Carmen and I to town tonight. A switch. Sent L. Film.



Saturday, August 22, 1964  

RAINED all day very hard. I made a pie, cake and cream puffs. Baked beans. Fern here for supper. Bill watched TV. Carmen down here most all day. Billie worked half a day. Got the cows in tonight.



Sunday, August 23, 1964

RAIN all day. I got up about 9 AM. Betty gone all day. Mike work. Fern, Lloyd called. Aunt Ava in p.m. Kennie and Dot called. I went to Denmark with Betty and Dawn. Billie down to Lawrence’s. Dorothea called today. I talked with she and Jeff. They have a colored TV.
