The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 24 - 27, 1964

Monday, August 24, 1964

A very nice hot sunny day. Cleared all off after two days of very good rain. I did my washing, got my clothes in, ironed after supper.

Tuesday, August 25, 1964

A beautiful day. I got my work done early. Went to Oxford with Fern and Lloyd, Carmen and I to see the new mobile home. Came home, Betty, Carmen and I to town, paid phone bill. Came home, prepared supper. Had Jean up, she enjoyed it very much.

Wednesday, August 26, 1964

I done up my work. Cloudy and rain showers. Picked some shell beans. Carmen got cold and wet today. I done some odds and end jobs after Carmen went to bed. We watched Democratic convention on TV tonight. Cleared off in early evening.

Thursday, August 27, 1964 Billie to Acton Fair

A nice day. Carmen and I here alone all day. Betty and Mike off with their close friends. Carmen is real cute. I did a big wash, picked shell beans. Fern, Lloyd called. Betty and Mike off tonight again with friends. Bill and I enjoyed the Democratic convention, the memorial tribute to JF Kennedy. Billie left tonight at about 7:30 to go to Acton fair. I’m glad for him.
