The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 3 - 6, 1964



Friday, July 3, 1964

Hot today. Billie hayed. Bill had to get up and go to work at three until eight. Had off the rest of the weekend. We went to Norway, had our pictures taken for the passports. Also checked on stove, sink and chairs for Betty. Betty began moving today and getting her apartment ready. Jeff, Nona and Kathy here.



Saturday, July 4, 1964

Cloudy in a.m., cleared in PM becoming very hot. We worked in the upstairs apartment of Betty and Mike’s. Also settled my room. Billie hayed most of the day. Betty had a stove, table and four chairs given her, also an easy chair for her living room. Art Ward’s family called and Fern and Lloyd in evening. Nona and Jeff called.



Sunday, July 5, 1964

Picked more strawberries, green peas. Fern, Lloyd here, Nola, and Jeff and Kathy called. Bill down town, watched ballgame in p.m. Billie worked for Lawrence haying. Betty and I worked upstairs.



Monday, July 6, 1964 DEMINGS ARRIVED

We done a very big wash today. It showered all day and rained hard. Betty to town in p.m. Billie to town to do his shopping, to get ready to go away for a three-day vacation. Betty had a stove, refrigerator and cabinet sink moved upstairs. She worked upstairs all day. Es and Susan and Billie came today about 7 o’clock. We all was glad to see each other.
