The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 23 - 26, 1964

Thursday, July 23, 1964 MIKE OUT

On the cloudy side. About 11:30 Mike called from Boston. Asked Betty if she could meet him at Portland Airport in about one hour. This is a call and word she has waited for now for exactly 3 years and two days. Esther drove us, Betty, Carmen and I to Portland to meet him. It is hard to believe he is home and no more army life. He may have a form of arthritis. MIKE FREE. MIKE HOME. One year ago today Mike came home for a 30 day leave.

A cloudy, dreary, miserable day. One bright spot in this house is up in Betty and Mike’s and Carmen’s home. Been so happy today. Hope this happiness lasts forever. I wrote to Dorothea, done regular work. Went down and called on George and Thena with Es, Billie and Sue. In evening Es took us or me to town to do my shopping. Fern, Sue and Billie went too. Betty and Mike up to Auburn tonight.

Saturday, July 25, 1964

Still cloudy and dreary all day. I baked beans and all. Es, Fern and Billie here for supper. Betty and Mike to town and done the grocery shopping.

Sunday, July 26, 1964

At last it cleared off and became quite warm. We got the work done and went on a picnic at Woods pond. Bill, Billie, Fern, Lloyd, Susan, Billie, Mike, Betty, Esther, Carmen and myself. Came home and sat outside on the lawn. Lloyd took his cat to the vets.
