The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 16 - 19, 1964



Saturday, May 16, 1964

A very nice beautiful day. On the very warm side. Billie up early and got his chores done and left at 5 AM to go to Vermont with Dave Thomas. Betty and I up early and went to Portland to get Blanche. Carmen went too. Came home, done up all the work. Fern, Lloyd called. Worked in the woods today. Mr. Vose called saying they was going to appraise the house.



Sunday, May 17, 1964 Planted

A beautiful day. Bill planted garden. Billie got home about 5 AM, they rode all night. Lloyd and Billie cut up the other quarter of beef. I wrapped it. Billie hurt his finger real bad. Betty up and to town to get paper. The house was appraised today $1500. Bill called at Vose. Alice and family called.



Monday, May 18, 1964

Another beautiful day. I did another one of those tremendous big wash’s today. I did my ironing and 1000 other things after supper. Betty off again (?) Still cutting timber. I went to town in a.m. with Fern and Lloyd and cleaned my blankets. Today I hung clothes out back for first time this year. Betty got a very nice letter from Mike. Only 33 days left in Old Korea. I got a gift from Dorothea.



Tuesday, May 19, 1964

A cloudy forenoon and rain in PM. They worked in the woods in forenoon. Betty worked today ironing. I didn’t do much of anything all day. Cleared off about suppertime. Bonnie came up. We had thundershowers in p.m. and during the night.
