The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

It was cloudy and showery. I defrosted the refrigerator. I ironed, vacuum the house, done up regular work and got ready and went to Portland with Betty, Joy and their kids. They done some last-minute school shopping. Then went to the orthodontist. Joy called for milk.

 



 

 

 

 

Thursday, August 6, 1981

 

A cloudy day, dite of sun. I done up my work. Went to town with Betty and Carmen. I picked beans, made a chocolate pudding. Bill worked on the boat. Billie went with Butch Gorman. Carmen rode Flicka. Zak rode his pony Dutchess. Kim called after supper. She don’t call very much. She is a nice girl. Also Carmen. These days it is something to have girls good like they are.

 

 

 

Friday, August 7, 1981

 

I did a done a wash, dried it in the dryer. I went down to Betty’s a little while. They all was cleaning up the house. Betty cleaned the barn. Bill up to Dorothea’s. Then done these lawns in PM. David called. Bill down to Walt’s, they worked on the barn.

Saturday, August 1, 1981

 

A real hot day. I got up early, done up the regular work then ironed. Got the beans in, made cake, washed all floors etc. etc. Then I worked at my desk. Zak called. Carmen and Dorothea away cleaning cottages. Kim is tending shop for Dorothea. Dorothea got to work at Carrie’s tonight. Bill and Billie been busy all day. Bill mowed the lawns. Zak took some vegetables to Fern on his trail bike.

 




 

 

 

 

Sunday, August 2, 1981

 

A nice hot sunny day. I done up regular work. Went up to the cottage lot in or about noon. Had a cookout. Watched the kids swim etc. Susan and her children came up to. They all went up in the truck. It was very nice up there. They are pleased they have this lot. Kim and Monica took a long boat ride down the lake and back.

Mostly clear. A very hot day. Clothes dried good. I picked Swiss chard and I froze some.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 4, 1981

 

A nice day, very hot and humid. Betty, kids up to New Hampshire to food shop. Also they bought some clothes and school supplies. Carmen’s slides had come so in evening we all took them down to Fern’s to show them. They were very good. Dorothea was there also. Billie and I picked a mess of peas for supper. They were so good.

Not very hot. I done regular work and a big ironing. Billie mowed the grass at Irene Chadbourne’s and David’s field. We had steaks cooked out on the grill for supper. Very good. Had rain showers tonight.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 29, 1981

 

It rained very hard last night. It was clearing this morning and cleared off good tonight. I didn’t do very much today. Checked over some papers etc. Billie in and out today.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 30, 1981

 

Not too hot today. Bill took us to town. I came home, done up what housework I didn’t get done before I went. Watched most of the programs. I have been busy all day. In PM Billie came with a bucket of blueberries, I picked them over and made a pie.

 



 

 

 

 

Friday, July 31, 1981

 

A very nice sunny day, on the quite hot side. I picked and froze some Swiss chard. I made a blueberry pie. I did a wash. Bill up to camp with Betty and Carmen. Kim worked at Fern’s in a.m. Bill did the grass trimming. Tax bill came today $692.25.

Thursday, July 24, 1981 a very nice sunny day, not too hot

 

I done a big Scotland wash for Carmen this morning. Billie mowed all of Joy’s hay today. They got Walt’s hay all in. Fern down to Betty’s today. I been busy all day. That was a good job done getting those clothes all done.

A beautiful day, it was sunny and not too hot. They got Joy’s hay all in. I baked beans, made rolls. I done up the work, took bath etc.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 26, 1981

 

Well it has been partly cloudy today, on the mild side. It rained in early evening. I done regular work today. Betty’s folks picked their string beans and froze them today. I had kohlrabi for supper. Billie liked it very much.

 

 

 

Monday, July 27, 1981 WINDY, Howard and Billie up to Groveton New Hampshire

 

Sunny and clear, but very windy. I did my wash. I cooked two chickens for Betty, one for myself. Having it with green peas and cukes. Bill took his car to garage to have it fixed. Billie gone up to Groveton New Hampshire with Howard Millett. We got heavy rain showers last night, no lightning or thunder, just rain.

It rained so awful hard all night. It did early this morning too. Then it cleared and it was a nice day. I didn’t do too much.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 22, 1981

 

A nice day. I done up the work. I walked down around the field with Heidi. Betty and Carmen up in top of the barn. Betty came down, went out, picked the peas. I had some for supper, they were so good.

 


The Vision Quest traveling group camped up on route 117 at the new lumber mill lot. We went up to see them. It was very nice and interesting. They are kind of delinquents and 14 to 18 years. They called this a reforming and training mission. It does work about 75% to the good. Their headquarters are in Pennsylvania.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 23, 1981 HAY MOWED

 

This is been a very nice sunny westerly breeze. Billie mowed Walt’s hay. I’m so glad, it is so late and the hay is gone by some. I went shopping with Dorothea. I done my ironing early. I came home, Fern here all day. Bill worked up to the camp. Also Cindy and Kim. Walt and Zak up and left home at 4 AM to go to visit his aunt and sister. Fern and I rode up to the camp with Betty to get the kids. Fern here all day.
