The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Wednesday, May 20, 1981

 

A beautiful day. I got my work done up and Billie and I went to New Hampshire. We done some grocery shopping. We got flowers and plants for the cemeteries and home gardens.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 21, 1981 Zak got hurt

 

A quite nice day, it was windy as usual. I done up my work and went to town. Bill and I, we took Delores. I came home, done some washing. Got supper. Zak here for supper. Betty and Walt on a two days relaxing trip. Zak got thrown off his bike. He had a very deep cut on his forehead. We had a steak supper.

Friday, May 22, 1981 WINDY

 

A nice day. I ironed. I cooked etc. etc. I watched programs. Bill down to Fern’s mowing. Bill did his trimming and Bill did the regular mowing. Dorothea worked for Carrie (?)Howe. In evening Joy, girls called also Susan, Monica and Randy.

 

 

 

Saturday, May 23, 1981

 

Another windy day. I done up my regular work, washed windows, floors, dusted etc. etc. I made rolls. In PM Betty, Kim and I went to the yard sale at Charlene’s. I bought quite a lot of things. A Mother’s Day gift from Betty and Walt. They are nice things and I like them very much. In evening Carmen and I went up to Dorothea’s. She gave Carmen a permanent. Bill and Billie worked on the Rototiller all day, it wouldn’t start. Finally got it to going. The wind has been awful all day. Dorothea worked for Carrie Howe.
