The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 1 - 4, 1981

 

Saturday, August 1, 1981

 

A real hot day. I got up early, done up the regular work then ironed. Got the beans in, made cake, washed all floors etc. etc. Then I worked at my desk. Zak called. Carmen and Dorothea away cleaning cottages. Kim is tending shop for Dorothea. Dorothea got to work at Carrie’s tonight. Bill and Billie been busy all day. Bill mowed the lawns. Zak took some vegetables to Fern on his trail bike.

 




 

 

 

 

Sunday, August 2, 1981

 

A nice hot sunny day. I done up regular work. Went up to the cottage lot in or about noon. Had a cookout. Watched the kids swim etc. Susan and her children came up to. They all went up in the truck. It was very nice up there. They are pleased they have this lot. Kim and Monica took a long boat ride down the lake and back.

 

 

 

Monday, August 3, 1981 $149.20 $339.30

 

Mostly clear. A very hot day. Clothes dried good. I picked Swiss chard and I froze some.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 4, 1981

 

A nice day, very hot and humid. Betty, kids up to New Hampshire to food shop. Also they bought some clothes and school supplies. Carmen’s slides had come so in evening we all took them down to Fern’s to show them. They were very good. Dorothea was there also. Billie and I picked a mess of peas for supper. They were so good.
