The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, May 16, 1981

 

A Rainy Rainy miserable day. I done my regular work. I changed the beds, swept, dusted, made bread, rolls, a chocolate pie. Washed floors. Dave called early, he had a load of sawdust. Bill here most all of the day smoking. Billie gone most of the day. Zak up for breakfast and watched his TV programs. Bill watched ballgame all PM. Billie got the screens up. I cleaned them and we got them on.

Sunday, May 17, 1981 cloudy and windy, on the cooler side

 

At last some sunshine. This is been a nice sunny day, but it has been cold and windy. I worked in the flower garden. Billie done the trimming. Bill worked at Dorothea’s in her antique room. He helped her put up shelves etc. David made door steps. Carmen called also Zak and Kim in PM. They done there lawn trimming and all today.

 

 

 

Monday, May 18, 1981

 

A heavy frost when we got up. 30°. It was sunny and pretty though. The wind has blown very hard all day, it made its very cold. I hung the clothes outside on the line, they dried very good. I did my ironing and made rhubarb pies. Also watched the soaps in PM. Walt home sick all day. Bill set out some strawberry plants today.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 19, 1981

 

I washed, cleaned up the house. Done a dite of cooking etc. I called at Betty’s.
