The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 31 - June 3, 1981

Sunday, May 31, 1981 Lawn mower broke down Betty’s

Rained hard most of the forenoon. I didn’t get up until 7:45. I got the breakfast, done up the work. I did a big ironing. I wrapped a couple Christmas gifts. I worked at the desk, wrote to Esther. Bill, Carmen, Kim and Zak all fishing. Billie over and got Susan’s car started. Betty’s lawn mower broke down today.

Monday, June 1, 1981 PERMANENT

I got my washing done early. Bill up to Dorothea’s, down to Fern’s. I got my summer permanent today. Cut real short. Busy all day.

Tuesday, June 2, 1981

Kind of sunny in forenoon, then a little cloudy in early PM. Then sun came out and it was sunny. I made a lemon meringue pie and cookies. Watched TV programs. Betty was here and we made plans for Carmen’s graduation party.

Wednesday, June 3, 1981 $134.40, $305.30

A dite of sun this morning. It clouded up during the day. I done the regular work. Then I did some ironing. Washed the floors, talked with Fern and Betty. David called this morning to get milk. I worked at my desk. Billie worked up to Arthur Andrews with the tractor. Bill worked on the bus and over to Joy’s and done some things over there. Betty helped Joy to finish her housecleaning up stairs. Checks came today.
