The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 4 - 7, 1981 Carmen's Last Day of High School

Thursday, June 4, 1981

 

Well cloudy and rain in a.m. Cleared in PM. Then we had a shower. I went to town in a.m. Bill took Delores and I. I came home, done up rest of the work. Washed, made a scalloped potato, got lunch. I worked at desk in PM.

 

 

 

Friday, June 5, 1981 CARMEN’S last day of school

 

 

Taking the big wheels to school


 

A very nice sunny day. I done work. I made a cake. I put the rinse on my hair. I went with Joy and Cindy to the Junior High class play. It was very good. Kathy was in it. She did her part very well. The Seniors had a great time today shouting, blowing horns, tossing things around. A celebration after the last bell rang for them at L. R. H. School. A very happy, mostly carefree part of their life gone.

 

 

 

Saturday, June 6, 1981

 

It was clear when we got up. It got foggy and cloudy. We got rain, it was very hot and humid. We got showers and high wind and very heavy wind in PM. In some surrounding areas they got tornadoes. It wasn’t too bad here. Carmen, Kim, Zak and Betty called at different times today. Bill built a set of door steps for David. David here and had coffee this morning. Billie in and out all day.

 

 

 

Sunday, June 7, 1981

 

A very nice sunny day. I didn’t do much, Bill did Dorothea and David’s other door steps. Billie went down country with Butch getting cattle. Kim, Carmen and Zak called today at different times during the day. We called at Dorothea’s a little while.
