The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Betty's Mother's Day Flowers

Sunday, May 10, 1981 MOTHER’S DAY it was a nice one

I got up at about 7:30. I got the breakfast, done up the work. It was a nice sunny day except the wind blowed from the East. It made it cool and damp. Dorothea, David, Betty, Walt, Carmen, Kim and Zak and Laurie called also Charlene and Tom. All called and greeted me on Mother’s Day. Also I got very pretty carnations from the Horton children. Money from Dorothea and Billie and a $50 gift certificate from Betty and Walt to get a gift or gifts as Charlene’s antique shop. I get a very pretty card from Jeff and all rest of the grandchildren and Dorothea, Laurie, Betty and Walt. A very nice day all in all.

Well it started out to be foggy and rain and drizzle but later in the a.m. it cleared. It was a quite nice day after all. Sun broke through about 10 AM. I defrosted the refrigerator, I did a big wash. I ironed, also I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies. Bill up to Dorothea’s in a.m., mowed Fern’s lawn in PM. Fixed Joy’s swing. Billie with Dorothea went to Norway in a.m., got Dorothea’s cupboards over there. Then he got the garden seed. Also Billie got Walt’s plowed ground harrowed and got a load of bedding.

A all day cloudy and rain. I worked all day cleaning pots, pans and bleaching the table dishes. They are so smooth and clean feeling. I made a pudding and washed. Bill painted at Dorothea’s. He and I went up to Dorothea’s with Bill after supper. Then Betty and I called at Fern’s. Billie gone most of the day.
