The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 16 - 19, 1988

Tuesday, August 16, 1988

Cloudy this morning and most of the day. It was cold and windy. Esther made a chocolate cake and two loaves dark bread. She had a delicious supper. Chicken, shell beans, corn, squash, cukes. Betty S was up for supper. We was very glad to have her. Dorothea came, she took care of the insurance for me, Social Security, bank accounts at the bank etc. She did so much. She and Betty have done so much all along. I don’t know what we would have done without their help and all the work Esther has done. She helped more than I can say. Nola - Glen called. Carmen called in the evening and Brogan. Dorothea sold property today. We are so pleased and she is too.

Wednesday, August 17, 1988 Esther left

Esther left today for home. Her plane left Portland at 5:45 PM. She was anxious to go. She and Billie went up to see Fern. I didn’t do much today. Got the supper tonight. Betty came up, she got Bill’s clothes out and Dorothea came and they took care of his clothes etc. At last there seems to be a break in some of this awful hot weather. Barry came and finished the porch tonight, the latticework. Esther came July 19 until August 18. Many things took place while she was here. She went to the wedding Kathy Smith and my birthday party. Dorothea, Fern and Betty moving in and Bill’s sickness, death and funeral. One party at Twin Oaks and all of the extreme hot weather.
