The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 27 - 30, 1988

 

Monday, June 27, 1988

 

A quite nice day, sunny, not too hot. I did the wash. Carmen and Brogan came first time Brogan has been here for four days. We sure miss seeing her. Kim came up, she brought up a breakfast cake she had just made. Nice and hot, delicious. She was very tired from her vacation. Billie over to Oxford and got some berries, meat, vegetables and groceries.

 

 

 

Tuesday, June 28, 1988

 

A quite nice day. Not too hot. Carmen and Brogan came and Kim. Billie worked in the garden, harrowed and hoed the vegetables. I didn’t do too much. Carmen cleaned up the house, got the lunches. Betty has Brogan for tonight and tomorrow.

 

 


 

Wednesday, June 29, 1988

 

A nice day. I done up my work, prepared something for lunch. Then I went down and stayed with Brogan over to her playhouse while Betty mowed lawns. Kim came over too. Brogan was so good. I came home late in PM. Zack over to Joy’s, working for Betty on Joy’s outdoor fireplace. Jason mowed and trimmed at Betty’s today. Carmen came and got my supper and she and Brogan here for supper. Then Carmen did dishes, swept floor etc.

 

 

 

Thursday, June 30, 1988

 

I done up regular work. It has been a cloudy day and at suppertime it began to rain. Billie over to Oxford and got some more berries and peas. Carmen came today. She, Brogan and I went to town. Brogan has a cold. We saw Kim down town. A lot of traffic and the stores were so full. Bill still not good, he gets weaker. Zack over to Joy’s all day again. Jason R worked at Betty’s again.
