The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 10 - 13, 1988

Tuesday, May 10 1988

 

Cloudy. It rained by showers. I done a lot of odd jobs. Made a rhubarb pie. I did a big wash, cleaned the stove etc. etc. Carmen came, she and Bill went to town and shop. Brogan stayed here. Watch soaps in PM. Billie over to Norway to get some things.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 11, 1988

 

This has been a cloudy miserable rainy day. Carmen worked at Betty’s in the barn. Also Zack. He had a hard time.

 

 

 

Thursday, May 12, 1988 First Greens

 

A very nice day. Betty and Carmen been busy all day. Carmen painted the floors on the porch. I picked the first mess of dandelion greens. They were delicious. We had Zack up for a steak supper. He enjoyed that very much. He wants to take his girl out tonight because he won’t be able to go to the Junior and Senior Prom because he has got to work tomorrow. He felt bad he couldn’t go.

 

 

 

Friday, May 13, 1988

 

A quite nice day. I did a wash. I did other jobs. Carmen and Brogan called for a little while. Brogan is so cute and smart. The fish man called. I got some haddock. Betty mowed her lawns for the first time today. Carmen cleaned her house. Kim called a minute. Eddie came down. Zack did the trimming after school. Billie got the screens on today. Also got my flower garden ready. Zack out on a date tonight.
