The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, July 21, 1988

 

Rain. The rain came. It rained hard all day. We done up the work. Brogan came at about 7:30 AM. She played around here all day or forenoon, very good. Betty came and got her around 11:30. Billie and Esther down town and up to Fern’s. Then when they came Esther cooked hotdogs for them. Then Betty, Brogan, Esther and I all went to Bolster’s Monument. Came home, got supper. We had a roast spareribs and vegetables Esther made. I made some rolls. Walt up for supper. Billie watching soaps. Kim called today also. Bill not very good today. He is quite confused.

 

 

 

Friday, July 22, 1988

 

Bill had a bad day, very weak and sick. He has a lot of problems. Billie and Esther over to Oxford shopping. Came home, had lunch. Betty here. Carmen had to work today. She may take a different job at the hospital. 10 hours a day. Esther up to Carlton and Phyllis this PM and for supper. Susan too. They had a nice supper and evening. Dorothea called this evening to see Bill and to help with caring for Bill. Susan called tonight when she brought Esther home. She looked very nice. Betty and the rest were up to camp tonight. Sadie, Betty Smith’s sister, had a stroke today.

 

 

 

Saturday, July 23, 1988

 

A nice sunny hot day. David came down this morning. He had a piece of Esther’s fresh made pineapple pie. Esther cleaned refrigerator and she straightened all the cupboards out. She made two pineapple pies. I done regular work. Esther washed the floors.

 

 

 

Sunday, July 24, 1988

 

A cloudy rainy day. Bill about the same. Didn’t do too much. Susan called in PM. Bill in bed all day. Carmen and Brogan called. Also Dorothea called to see Bill.
