The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 22 - 25, 1988

Sunday, May 22, 1988

 

What a miserable day it was, not too cold. I wrote to Esther. Read the papers. Also looked over some clippings etc. Carmen came, she feels a dite better outside of the swelling in her nose. Brogan was glad to see all of us. Kim worked today. Billie harrowed the gardens to get it ready for planting.

 

 

 

Monday, May 23, 1988

 

A miserable day early but later it was better and sun came out. Quite hot and humid. I did the washing. I cooked a chicken for supper. Carmen, Kim, Betty and Zack gone to Portland to do shopping for the clothes for the wedding they are going to next Saturday. Walt’s sister’s daughter. Carmen had the stitches and braces taken out today. She was relieved from some pressure.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 24, 1988

 

I done up regular work. Carmen and Brogan came. We went down to see the new clothes. Billie planted some gardens today. Beans, shell and string and lettuce and Swiss greens. A quite nice day.

Wednesday, May 25, 1988

 

Rain Again. Got up and it was raining again. I done up the regular work, made a pudding. Carmen and Brogan called. Then Carmen and Kim went to get their hair done. Carmen will clean this PM. Billie out looking for pullets.
