The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 25 - 28, 1988

Monday, July 25, 1988

 

It was cloudy but it cleared away, the clouds and fog. Dorothea came, she took care of Bill today. Bathed him and shaved. He was quite weak. He didn’t get up except to go to the bathroom. Esther and Billie up to Bethel for some eggs. They got five dozen. They picked some string beans. I cooked a smoked shoulder. Carlton and Phyllis called a little while. They were out walking. Esther made some date bread, very good. In evening Jeff, Dorothea and Jeff’s girlfriend called. We liked her very much.

 

 


 

Tuesday, July 26, 1988

 

Betty came today, she helped with Bill. Also Carmen came and done the housework. Kim called today. Donnie Warren had a heart attack and died last night. Partly cloudy and thundershowers. Betty had Brogan tonight. Betty S, Joy up to Dorothea’s and took her gifts up for her 51st birthday. Susan called to see us today. Bill about the same. Carmen and Brogan called this evening. Brogan was full of pep tonight. She did a lot of acting out, so cunning. They went up to Dorothea’s after that.

 

 

 

Wednesday, July 27, 1988

 

Cloudy and rain showers in a.m. cleared in PM. Bill up more today and acted a dite better. We washed today. I cooked chicken for supper. Esther down tonight with Susan. Dorothea here to take care of Bill. Betty and Brogan came. Betty and Walt are going on there trip.

 

 

 

Thursday, July 28, 1988

 

I did a washing and ironing. Esther went to Conway with Phyllis, Betty Es and Susan was up there also. Betty came up today to do some things for Bill.
