The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 17 - 23, 1948 Haying



Saturday, July 17, 1948

Phil Hodgins mowed all the big field. Picked 15 quarts berries, made jam. I mowed grass.



Sunday, July 18, 1948

Very good day. Lloyd, Kennard and Val here, they hauled in a lot of hay. I raked with Lloyd’s horse. Had good mess peas.

Monday, July 19, 1948

Nice day. Bill stayed at home, he and Val got in the rest of the hay up in the big field. We washed, picked peas.



Tuesday, July 20, 1948

Nice day. Picked peas to can and also picked some berries. Bill worked today. I picked some strawberries, also Betty and Dorothea.



Wednesday, July 21, 1948

Canned peas. Nice day. Clear, cool. Bill took his car down to B. Harmon’s garage.



Thursday, July 22, 1948

Nice day. Didn’t do much. Barbara Conant here today, she and Dorothea took a walk down in woods.



Friday, July 23, 1948

Rain most of the day. Picked peas. Betty moved her bed. Kennard Schaeffer and Bob called in eve.

Nice hot day. All went down to see the moose and Dot’s new house. Bill, grandpa, Grammy two kids and Mama and I.



Sunday, July 11, 1948

Picked berries. Bill’s father and mother went back down to Jean’s tonight.



Monday, July 12, 1948

Bill back to work. We washed. I picked some berries for George Stevens. Dorothea earned $1.00 helping me.



Tuesday, July 13, 1948

Dorothea and I picked a few berries for store. Mr. Ridley called here today. Got a shower. Hot.



Wednesday, July 14, 1948

I cleaned out tops of the barn to get it ready to put the hay into.

I washed. Nice day.



Friday, July 16, 1948

Cleaned up the house and ironed. Mowed some grass. Phil came down with tractor to mow.

July 3 - 9, 1948 Bill Home From Hospital

Very nice day. No word from Bill. Mr. Crook and I picked berries. Charlie and Jean called and Eve. Fern and Lloyd late eve with groceries.



Sunday, July 4, 1948

Bill’s mom and dad and I went for a walk down through woods. Ruby went home. Fern and L, Bob and family here for fireworks in eve.



Monday, July 5, 1948

I talked with Bill today it seemed so good I miss him a lot. Rained today. We washed, pick some berries. Kennard called in eve. Kennie, Dot and L called in p.m.



Tuesday, July 19 48

Raining. Bill came home from hospital today. Charlie got him. He looks good and isn’t lame.



Wednesday, July 7, 1948

Bill and I went to town. Nice day. Bill, grandpa and I picked berries. Mr. Randall had a 100 pound calf born at his place.



Thursday, July 8, 1948

Washed. Mabel Grover came up and picked berries to can. A very nice day. Randall all called to see calf.



Friday, July 9, 1948

Another nice day. Picked berries, ironed. Mama down to Milan’s to help Betty can berries. Another calf born to the Randall farm.

June 26 - July 2, 1948 Bill to Eye and Ear Infirmary in Portland

A very nice day. Es, Mama and kids downtown in a.m. Dot went swimming first time today. Bill’s father, mother also Sara here tonight. Es and Fern and Bob here in eve. Bill and I went to town in Es’s car.

Cloudy. Dr. here to see Bill again. We picked a crate and half of strawberries today. Bill’s father and mother here.



Monday, June 28, 1948

Rained in a.m. Mr. Randall’s cows came down here to be pastured today.


Tuesday, June 29, 1948

Rain in a.m., clearing and hot in p.m. Dr. Mabry took Bill to Eye and Ear Infirmary today. Dots grandfather and I picked over two crates berries today.Were washed. Callers in eve.



Wednesday, June 30, 1948

Bill’s dad and I picked berries. Land bank man here. Charlie here today. Amy (? Army) called up to see how Bill is.



Thursday, July 1, 1948

Nice day. Grandpa, Dorothea and I picked 58 quarts strawberries. Rado called. Fern and Lloyd, Milan, Schaeffer’s, Bob and family. No word from Bill.



Friday, July 2, 1948

Grandpa mowed grass. Dot made cookies. Grandpa and I picked berries. Charlie and Jean called in p.m. Ken brought up firecrackers, he and kids shot them off.

June 19 - 25, 1948 A BIG SURPRISE

A Big Surprise. Carlton came home and Esther with him. We all almost passed out. It was so nice. Rained in a.m. cleared in p.m. Uncle Lewis here for supper. Dutch Pike called.



Sunday, June 20, 1948

Nice day. Esther took Mama and Dorothea down to Betty’s in a.m. Fern, Lloyd and Es took Mama, D, B, and I up to Randall’s. Bill’s father and mother here. Carkie called.

Monday, June 21, 1948

Es here all day. She and kids and Mama at Betty’s and Milan’s in p.m. Also Alby Grover called. Did big wash in eve. Bill and we all went to cemetery and for a ride around Long Pond.



Tuesday, June 22, 1948

Es and I went to town. Bill picked some ripe S. berries. Timie had four kittens last night. Puss having hers tonight. Bill’s father, Gordon called and Raymond Allen. Mama and Es to Kennard’s in p.m.

Mowed lawns. Down to Jean’s. Es took Betty and Dorothea on an outing, they enjoyed it. Cloudy and rained in p.m.



Thursday, June 24, 1948

Mowed lawns. Rained. Bad thundershowers. Mr. Ridley called. Delores went today. Leo Plunkett got struck by lightning. Bill still lame.



Friday, June 25, 1948

A very nice day. I washed. Betty and Es called in PM and Norma Gay. Bill not back to work, picked 5 quarts strawberries today.
