The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 5 - 8, 1964



Sunday, January 5, 1964

Nice day, didn’t get up too early. Made a oyster stew. Bill better. Kennie, Dot, Rayburn, Joan and Karen called. Aunt Ava called today. Billie better.



Monday, January 6, 1964

Not too cold. Another one of those long washes. Had to rush to town and to work. Bill back to work. Stormed some tonight.



Tuesday, January 7, 1964

A beautiful day. Betty and Carmen down to Dawn’s. Had a good time and wonderful spaghetti dinner. I cleaned up the house. Made a salad, cooked a chicken. Blanche over, she and I to town and mailed some packages. I got one off to Dorothea. I bought a pair of gloves for Dorothea and Jeff for Mama to send her.

A beautiful mild day. I cleaned up the chambers, mailed Dorothea and Jeff’s gloves. Randy Harmon called. Also Ken and Dolores.

January 1 - 4, 1964



Wednesday, January 1, 1964

14 below this morning. I went to work at 11 AM to 6 PM. Betty and I called at Ferns in evening. Bill and Billie home all day. Betty home all evening. Carmen a dite better. Mama not very good.



Thursday, January 2, 1964

Milder. I didn’t get much done today. Blanche here. Betty called at Lil’s. When I went to work we called at Aunt Ava’s. Carmen feels mean from that old cold. Not so cold today. Betty down to Louise’s tonight.



Friday, January 3, 1964

I cleaned living room, dining room and washed kitchen floor and windows. To work at three. Cleaned up Grace’s house. Billie to doctors, got a strep throat. Carmen better and downtown for first time since last week. $49.



Saturday, January 4, 1964

A nice warm day. I went to town early on my way to work to pay some bills. $50 to Howard. Bill home sick. Carmen over to Blanche’s. Dot and Ed and Mildred up for Grace for her 80th birthday.

December 29 - 31, 1963

We done up the work. Aunt Ava here, Fern, Lloyd and Blanche called. Carmen coming down with a cold. I to work at three. Mama ordered us to move from here in three weeks. Betty and I down to Ferns on my way to work.



Monday, December 30, 1963

Cold and windy. I did a big wash. Carmen very sick today, had Dr. Richards for her. Blanche here today. Mama about the same. Bill 55 today. Billie had a new cow come from Lawrence. A roan red.



Tuesday, December 31, 1963

20 below this morning. I was busy all day, got dinner at noon. Bill home, had afternoon off. Dolores here in p.m.



Well this is the end of 1963. It’s goodbye with all the big events. Pres. Kennedy’s death. Lassie Crook’s death. Carmen Christie Boutilier’s birth. Christie Crook came to live with us. Goodbye old 1963.

December 25 - 28, 1963 Mama Had a Heart Attack

Wednesday, December 25, 1963 DOROTHEA CALLED

A nice day. Fern, Lloyd and Bob here for dinner. Mama had a heart attack this morning. Not good all day. Had a nice lot of gifts and a delicious dinner thanks to Fern. Turkey, roast pork, gravies, mashed potato, turnip, peas, onions, salad, pickles, rolls, date filled, butter crunch pies, chocolate cake, white cake, chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream. Mama had a heart attack. Kennie, Dot, Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis here in p.m. To work at five. Billie gone all day. Ugh. Best of all talked with Dot, Den and Jeff.






Thursday, December 26, 1963

Well, Christmas is over and I’m so glad. Betty got the tree out and cleaned up from it all. Fern and Lloyd called. To work at three. Billie didn’t work. Betty was so good and helpful so much.



Friday, December 27, 1963

$49. Blanche here all day. Mama up and dressed today. She was mad because we had the doctor. She is in bad shape. Dr. Bish tested Carmen’s water, she has infection in it. Dolores comes back today. Bill mad at Betty about not coming back with the car. He made her mad and me too. He acts like a damn fool, it doesn’t help him anymore than it ever did.



Saturday, December 28, 1963

Clear, a nice sunny day, cold. I done up most of the work. Bill and I to town to get groceries etc. Paid rest of the taxes today. Fern up for supper. Went to work at three. Bonnie stayed here last night. Carmen sick with cold.

10 below. Cold again this morning. I was busy doing up the work. Had to go to town again grocery shopping. I got Billie’s insurance and car payments off. Alice, Doreen and Timmy called. Fern up for supper.



Sunday, December 22, 1963

A fair day, on the cool side. Fern and Lloyd called, Bob and Blanche. I done up the work. Betty up and to town early to get the paper.



Monday, December 23, 1963

Betty and I to Portland today to do our Christmas shopping. What a day. Blanche here with Mama and Carmen. We shopped for Mama and Billie. It snowed in the night. I went to work at 3:30.



Tuesday, December 24, 1963

Today it clouded up and snowed. I cooked, got some things done for Christmas. Betty wrapped packages all day. I got my permanent over to June’s. Lloyd had to tote me around.
