The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 6 - 9, 1963



Sunday, October 6, 1963

A very nice day. Bill finished picking apples. Also got them picked over. Nola here, also Jeff, Nona, and Kathy here in a.m. Bill down to Lloyd’s in late p.m. to the ballgame. Dodgers won. Bob and Blanche called. Kennie, Dot and Wanda.



Monday, October 7, 1963

A very nice hot day. Temperature in Boston 89°, Connecticut 90 degrees, Maine 75 to 85°. Real unseasonable weather. Wash dried good, ironed after supper. Betty up to Lil’s. Betty stayed upstairs most all day.



Tuesday, October 8, 1963

Not so warm, but mild in a.m. Got cooler. Bill slept on the back porch last night. Dolores called in a.m. I made some brownies, took Carmen out in the stroller. Betty came down and she asked me about going to Norway with her. We did, she got Carmen some clothes. Also she bought her a new TV. Sylvania 23 inch screen.



Wednesday, October 9, 1963

Another beautiful day, on the cold side. Betty upstairs enjoying her new TV. I canned tomatoes, made some jelly. Had a steak supper, Fern up. Bob and Blanche called to get apples. Took Carmen out in her stroller, Betty, Lassie and I.
