The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 2 - 5, 1963 Betty missed the Beverly Hillbillies!



Wednesday, October 2, 1963

Another beautiful day. I cleaned up the house, washed kitchen floor and windows. Betty over to Fryeburg Fair with Bonnie, met Iris Stewart. I cut the old Dalia stocks down. Billie to the Fair tonight. Betty and I called at Ferns. Betty to town. She didn’t get to see the Beverly Hillbillies.



Thursday, October 3, 1963

A beautiful day. We took Carmen out in the carriage. We done the work up. Had a shower in late p.m. Billie to fair today and tonight.



Friday, October 4, 1963

Another beautiful day. Cold. To the Fair today with Fern and Lloyd. Had a good time. Betty cashed her check and paid bills. No letter from Mike. Carmen had a shot today. Bonnie up here today.



Saturday, October 5, 1963

Another beautiful day. I cooked, cleaned up the house. Alice, Dennis, Doreen and Timmy. Timmy stayed while they went to the Fair. Bill, Betty, Billie and Timmy picked apples. Betty on the blue side. No word from Mike. Billie out of sorts in p.m.
