The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 23 - 27, 1963 Lorraine's Newborn Son Dies



Monday, September 23, 1963

Very cold this morning. Snow, sleet and rain. It cleared about 10. I did my wash. Very cold hanging it out. Betty and Carmen down town in p.m. In evening Betty to town again.



Tuesday, September 24, 1963

Cold. Very cold this morning. Rest of the plants froze outside last night. I cooked. Fix tomatoes and cukes for pickles. Picked tomatoes over and canned some. Bill worked on car. Betty ironed after supper. I visited at Aunt Ava’s and Ferns. Very pretty day.



Wednesday, September 25, 1963

A nice day. I made my pickles. Fern and Lloyd called. Also Dolores. Bill’s last day of vacation.



Thursday, September 26, 1963 First Pullet Egg

Hot. Another very nice day. Betty to Norway with Blanche. A very very mild day. Mama for a ride with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. I cleaned up the house, churned four and half pounds of butter. In evening Betty, Carmen and I down to Ferns. Dana Carlton Harmon died. He was one-day-old. We feel so sorry.
