The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A beautiful day. About 9 o’clock Mama, Blanche and I took Mama down to Pineland. We saw Donnie. Then drove over to see Dr. Nash at Freeport. Betty has had a terrible scare. By phone call. After all was cleared up it was okay. Hazel Maybury.

A cold fair day. Our well passed out. We done up our work. Went to town. Bonnie came back and watched Route 66 with Betty on her new TV.

Saturday, October 12, 1963 LASSIE

Real cool and windy day. Clear. This morning I got up with a thug in my heart. I done a little cleaning up. At about 12:30 Blanche and I left for Norway with Lassie. We have had her and loved her dearly for 14 years. She has given us all much enjoyment, she grew up with the children who loved her and she loved them. Today in about 2 PM she was put to sleep. When she closed her eyes she had a restful and happy look. Many happy memories you gave us Lassie. Billie gave our dear pal a good burial in one of her most enjoyed spots. She has traveled this farm many happy times with us and alone. She is dearly loved by 2 girls far away, Susan and Dorothea. God love her and bless her, she always has been and will be loved and in our hearts.

Hauled our water. Fire at Merrill’s in Harrison.
