The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 22 - 25, 1963 John Kennedy Assassination

Friday, November 22, 1963 $49

President John Kennedy assassinated in Dallas Texas today at 12:30 – 1 PM. A very good president was shot. He was a man of honesty, courage, determination, love, vigorous faith and Christianity. All of these made him what he was for the nation and all of the world. He was loved by all and I mean all. Everyone, every nation was stunned and mourned his death. He was loved by everybody. We lost a good man and leader. Our new president was sworn in, Lyndon Baines Johnson of Texas.

Saturday, November 23, 1963

The whole nation mourns for President Kennedy. All radio and TV newsman, commentators, statesmen break in their voices when talking about him. Nothing on TV or radio except the going ons in Washington about the late JFK.

Sunday, November 24, 1963

Watch more on TV about JFK, his widow and children, it is so pathetic. Also for the policeman’s family in Dallas Texas who was killed by Kennedy’s assassin. Lee Harvey Oswald was shot today. He was the man that shot President Kennedy. A nice cold sunny day. Billie got a cow today from Lawrence to use while ours is dry.

Monday, November 25, 1963

A very touching and emotional sight on TV today, the funeral of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Very very very sad. Everything closed all over the country today in honor of the funeral of the late president. All was quiet everywhere. A nice sunny day but cold.
