The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 21 - 24, 1963 Nanny Begins New Job

Monday, October 21, 1963

Fern 61 today. I washed some things for her. Instead of 61 she looks 101. I wish she was better. Very poor health. She and Lloyd went to Eleanor Pike’s funeral. Dolores called here this morning. Hilda and Aunt Ava called in late p.m. Kennard and Delores took Mama to the doctors at Naples. In the very best of health she is. I wish her kids were as well. Doctors don’t know. Betty got sore throat, don’t feel very good. Got the clothes in and ironed after supper.

Tuesday, October 22, 1963

Cloudy, cold and East wind. No rain. I was behind all day with my work. Dolores here twice. Betty in bed most all day. She don’t feel good. Coming down with a cold. Fern, Lloyd called.

Wednesday, October 23, 1963

Another nice rainless day. I churned, went to town with Fern and Lloyd in a.m. In p.m. I got new frames for my glasses. In evening I got a haircut and set. Betty down to Julie’s. Hair cut and set tonight.
